Veja nesse vídeo, divulgado pela AIIC (Association internationale des interprètes de conférence), toda a preparação para o trabalho dos intérpretes que trabalharam na reunião de cúpula do G-20, realizada na semana passada.

Yolla Abou-Haidar é a coordenadora da equipe de 64 intérpretes, todos recrutados em Paris: 57 para a tradução simultânea nas cabines e 7 para acompanhar o presidente Nicolas Sarkozy em suas várias reuniões bilaterais. Entre outras tarefas, Yolla leva toda a equipe para visitar o local de trabalho no célebre Palais des Festivals em Cannes: a sala plenária, as cabines de tradução, as salas de reuniões bilaterais, a sala em que Sarkozy receberá seus ilustres convidados. Ela também é responsável pela obtenção dos documentos importantes para o trabalho dos intérpretes em cabine. E analisa a fundo o programa para garantir que todas as necessidades de tradução sejam atendidas.

Há também o depoimento de alguns intérpretes tais como Meei-huey Wang, intérprete de português do presidente da França, que comenta sobre a formação especial dos intérpretes e a importância fundamental do sigilo profissional, indispensável para uma relação de confiança. Para Edgar Weiser, intérprete de francês e alemão, o trabalho de um intérprete envolve manter-se a par da atualidade da política internacional, da economia, das relações internacionais, e preparar-se de modo mais focado nos temas da reunião. Ele ressalta a necessidade de se ter uma grande bagagem de cultura geral e uma mente aberta e curiosa. Além disso, os assuntos tratados são questões de peso, e isso exige, diz ele, uma concentração muito grande, auto-controle e um bom conhecimento dos temas. Ao se ver confiada tamanha responsabilidade, Edgar se sente honrado, apesar do “frio no estômago à altura do desafio” e compara: “Um ator que não sente aquele “frio no estômago” não é um bom ator…”

E qual foi a impressão dos intérpretes após o encerramento da Cúpula? A resposta é unânime: o ambiente de trabalho foi ótimo e os intérpretes foram muito cooperativos!

Nele há depoimentos, entre outros, de Diana Liao, Intérprete-Chefe da ONU em Nova York, e de Sydney Pollack, diretor do filme “A Intérprete”.

Os temas abordados são: a diferença entre o trabalho do intérprete e o do tradutor, como o intérprete se prepara para as conferências, o estresse da profissão e a enorme responsabilidade do intérprete que trabalha em reuniões políticas, onde uma palavra mal traduzida pode provocar um mal-entendido fatal.

Sob esse título, a seção francesa da AIIC (Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conférence) lançou uma campanha para promover os benefícios da utilização de serviços de interpretação.

“Quando as ideias, os raciocínios e as sutilezas importam, recorra aos intérpretes de conferência.” E conclui dizendo: “Na minha língua materna digo o que eu quero. Numa língua estrangeira digo o que eu posso.”

Have you ever sat down in an interpreter’s booth, put on the headphones and tried to interpret the incoming speech? I did when I was a young and rather naive student who thought that being bilingual meant one could interpret simultaneously. No sooner had I started that problems arrived. As I was outputting the first sentence, the second one was already coming in but I hadn’t paid enough attention to it. I remembered its beginning but not its ending. Very quickly I fell behind and I just couldn’t say anything more after a few minutes!

Many years later I still remember the scene vividly and because of it, but also because of my own research on the perception and production of speech, I have the utmost respect for interpreters and the training they have to go through to do their job well.

Interpreters come in various types (community, conference, sign language) and interpreting itself is diverse in that it can be consecutive or simultaneous. I will take two extreme cases of interpreting that differ on many aspects including age: bilingual children who act as interpreters and adult simultaneous interpreters.

Many children who belong to minorities (immigrants, migrant workers, Deaf people) act as successive interpreters as well as cultural intermediaries between their communities and the outside world. Despite the fact that they have no training in community interpreting, these children’s natural abilities never cease to impress us. Stanford University professor Guadalupe Valdés examined the strategies adopted by Spanish-English bilingual youngsters and found they used a number of strategies to convey essential information, including tone and stance. They were also able to compensate for linguistic limitations. Valdés concluded that the traits and abilities they exhibited were characteristic of exceptional cognitively competent children.

Authors Brian Harris and Bianca Sherwood, some years prior, had described a young Italian girl (BS) who, before she was four, was already interpreting between the Abruzzi dialect and Italian. She then acquired Spanish when her family moved to Venezuela, and English when they moved to Canada. In no time at all she was interpreting from, and to, these languages for her parents: phone calls, conversations, messages, radio and TV programs, etc. In addition, she quickly developed diplomatic skills, softening her father’s outbursts when bargaining with non-Italians. Her father once told her to call his interlocutor a nitwit; she calmly said, “My father won’t accept your offer”!

Some of these childhood interpreters sometimes find themselves, as adults, in the role of professional interpreters after having followed intensive training in schools such as those in Monterey or Geneva. (Of course, many other interpreters have not had to go through this kind of childhood experience although the majority do grow up bilingual).

In addition to having all the skills of translators (see here), professional interpreters must have all the linguistic and cognitive skills that allow them to go from one language to the other, either simultaneously or successively. For example, simultaneous interpreting involves careful listening, processing and comprehending the input in the source language, memorizing it, formulating the translation in the target language, and then articulating it, not to mention dual tasking, i.e. letting the next sequence come in as you are outputting the preceding one. Researcher David Gerver has reported that interpreters overlap speaking one language while listening to another up to 75% of the time!

Interpreters must activate the two languages they are working with. They have to hear the input (source) language but also the output (target) language, not only because they have to monitor what they are saying but also in case the speaker uses the target language in the form of code-switches (see here). However, they must also close down the production mechanism of the source language so that they do not simply repeat what they are hearing (as they sometimes do when they get very tired!).

Given these processing requirements, in addition to knowing translation equivalents in numerous domains and subdomains (e.g. business, economic, medical), as well as stylistic variants, it is no wonder that interpreters, like translators, are considered special bilinguals. As the saying so rightly states:

It takes more than having two hands to be a good pianist.
It takes more than knowing two languages to be a good translator or interpreter.
